Outings

Model hobbyists of all kinds were displaying their models at this free event at the Museum of Steam and Technology. They were also offering rides on the model steam trains.

The museum houses the 150 year old waterworks: two 70-ton steam powered water pumping engines.

Yesterday we took the shuttlebus to the Battlefield Museum for the Re-enactment of the Battle of Stoney Creek (free this year for Canada's 150th). There was much more to see and do than I expected, and after we came home I realized we never even saw the Museum!

The tower is a monument commemorating the Battle of Stoney Creek.
A total force of about seven hundred on the British side (British troops and militia) fought upwards of three thousand American soldiers. An inscription on the stone slab beside the door to the tower includes this description of the battle:
"In the dead of night, the British Advanced from Burlington Heights and, surprising the enemy, put him to confusion. This is held to have been the decisive engagement in the War of 1812-1813. Here the tide of invasion was met and turned by the pioneer patriots and soldiers of the King of one hundred years ago. More dearly than their lives they held those principles and tradition of British liberty of which Canada is the inheritor."

Joseph got a nasty-looking gash on his arm, which he bore valiantly. The application of stage make-up isn't very painful.

Period magic shows were a hit, of course.
