Joseph graduated from Grade 8 and we celebrated by taking him biking downtown and to Dundurn Castle.
Dinner at a harbour front café was perfect on this lovely evening...
...Especially when followed by ice cream from Wit's End!
(It wasn't actually Wit's End, but "it felt like Wit's End, hey?," enthused our resident enthusiast.)

"The air just feels so nice, hey?.... The water looks so much like a painting, hey? It's just like what I picture the water to look like in the painting of the Dawn Treader... We should come here more often... it's so nice, hey?"
He's kind of a fun kid to hang around with, hey? :)
"There's so much scope for the imagination!" M called over his shoulder as we soared past a deserted train yard, a graffitied demolition site, and townhouses of all descriptions, ranging from ordinary to bizarre. The ornamental railings on one home were spider webs wrought in iron. Another home had a mystifying menagerie on the well-kept, fully fenced lawn: a full size plastic motorcycle, a picnic blanket nicely spread with canisters, a coat tree with a lone winter coat hanging on it, and countless other unexpected and unexplicable items, like a scene out of your weirdest dream.
Tucked away on a lonely side street was a yard sale with Good Stuff. The Dickensesque name of the street was
Crook, and amongst the interesting wares was a sea crustacean encased in some kind of mysterious orange rubber. While our aspiring Marine Zoologist admired this specimen, a woman wandered over wielding an axe. An
axe? Yes. Or
ax, if you'd rather.
M said aloud what we all may or may not have been thinking: "Watch out for the axe murderer!"
The axe murderer laughed (guiltily?) and said something like, "Oh, I should put this thing away, I suppose...."
Back at Dundurn the crowds were gathering for their Light up the Knight event.
With a little extra time before Dundurn's light and sound show we took a twilit walk through the nearby cemetery.
The best thing about our evening out was that Joseph, resident enthusiast, aspiring Marine Zoologist, and also an aspiring author - was inspired by it all to write another book. I love when he is inspired to write more books. :)
"And I hardly even have to make anything up!" he said happily.
