A Little Peek at God's Underwater Wonders

Saturdays are precious. On Saturday, one might possibly be able to accomplish all kinds of things that couldn't be shoehorned into previous five workdays.

Or - you never know - one might possibly, just possibly, spontaneously go larking in the big city, in search of God's underwater wonders at Ripley's Aquarium!

Somehow the idea came up as M was perking his morning coffee. It was mere chatter, but it quickly turned serious when a casual search online for the price of admission revealed that Joseph's ticket cost would go up on his birthday. There's nothing that more effectually lights a fire under a Dutchman (or Dutchwoman), than the looming threat of a price increase.

In short order tickets were booked, lunches were packed, and we were off!

Joseph was over the moon, to put it mildly.
The variety and complexity of marine life really is astounding.

"Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways,

And how small a whisper we hear of Him!" Job 26:14
Above, an adult flounder lies on the aquarium floor. The flounder begins life with eyes on either side of his head, but as he matures, one of the eyes migrates to the same side as the other eye!

I loved the glass tunnel through shark infested waters!

We watched the sting rays being fed. It looked so much like they were smiling at as as they swam back and forth, often right up against the glass... but those holes above their mouths are not their eyes - their eyes are on the top of their head.

The kids loved the opportunities to pet sting rays, small sharks, and horseshoe crab. They also held cleaner shrimp.

It was handy having our resident marine zoology expert as our personal tour guide. :)

Joseph also studiously took notes...

What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit him?
For You have made him a little lower than the angels,
And You have crowned him with glory and honor.
You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands;
You have put all things under his feet,
All sheep and oxen—
Even the beasts of the field,
The birds of the air,
And the fish of the sea
That pass through the paths of the seas.

O Lord, our Lord,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth!

Psalm 8:4-9

Before heading home we made a quick stop at the Distillery District to see the Lights Festival.
